A Sheffield Classic: Wheaten Bread, Baked the Same Way Since 1958

Some things don’t need reinventing.

Our Wheaten Bread has been part of Sheffield life since 1958 — the same wholesome, nutty loaf our grandparents baked and loved.

Recently, while looking through our old bakery archives, we uncovered something rather special: the original letter from Muntons, dated 1958, introducing my grandfather, Jim Rose, to a new ingredient — Nuttimalt, a malted wheat blend that promised a richer, more nourishing loaf.

He took that idea and turned it into something uniquely Roses. A soft, hearty bread with a gentle sweetness and rich, toasted flavour that still feels just as comforting today.

Nearly seventy years later, we’re still baking it the same way — by hand, in small batches, using that same malted wheat blend. No shortcuts. No compromises. Just the kind of honest bread Sheffield families have grown up with.

Generations of our customers have sat around their kitchen tables with this loaf — from packed lunches and weekend breakfasts to slices thick with butter beside a bowl of soup. It’s the same loaf your grandparents ate, still baked fresh every morning in our Sheffield bakery.

Because good bread never goes out of style.
